Asylum Class

From outside Canada

Requests made outside Canada are classified into two classes:
1. Convention Refugee Abroad: For those applicants who are outside their country of origin and cannot return for fear because of their race, religion, political opinion, nationality, or sexual orientation.

To apply, the applicant must:

  • Be outside of Canada and want to come to Canada
  • Be referred by the High Commissioner for Refugees of the United Nations (UNHCR acronym) or other recognized organization
  • Have been selected to receive assistance from the government or a private entity, or have the funds necessary for the support of the applicant and his family upon their arrival in Canada

2. Country of Asylum Class: For those applicants who are outside their home country or outside the country where they normally live and have been constantly affected by armed conflict, civil war, or violation of human rights.
To apply, the applicant must:

  • Be outside of Canada and want to come to Canada
  • Be referred by the High Commissioner for Refugees of the United Nations (UNHCR acronym) or other recognized organization
  • Have been selected to receive assistance from a private entity, or have the funds necessary for the support of the applicant and his family on his arrival in Canada
  • Demonstrate that the applicant and all persons traveling are in good health
  • Demonstrate that the applicant and all persons traveling have no criminal records
